Westerville is home to six office parks and the headquarters of Cheryl’s Cookies, Worthington Industries, the Cellar Lumber Company, and more.

Westerville is positioned between two major shopping districts, Polaris Fashion Place and Easton Town Center, providing plenty of retail shops and restaurants for residents to enjoy. Westerville hosts more than 40 community parks and open spaces, in addition to three Columbus and Franklin County Metropolitan Parks, Blendon Woods, Sharon Woods and Inniswood Botanical Garden and Nature Preserve. The Westerville Community Center is a 96,000-square-foot building with a track, pool, gym, and fitness programs. The Ohio to Erie Trail runs through Westerville, providing several miles of maintained bike paths.

The majority of students in Westerville attend schools within Westerville City Schools, which includes 15 elementary schools, four middle schools, and three high schools. Additionally, there are several private schools options in Westerville, including Northside Christian School, St. Paul Catholic Church and School, Worthington Christian Middle School, and more. Westerville is home to many institutions of higher learning, including Otterbein University, Hondros College, Dominion University, Fortis College, and more. The area now known as Westerville was originally settled around 1810. In 1818, three settlers of Dutch extraction named Matthew, Peter, and William Westervelt, migrated to the area from New York. In 1836, Matthew Westervelt donated land to be used for a Methodist church, and the settlement was named Westerville in the family’s honor. The Blendon Young Men’s Seminary was chartered in 1839, and Matthew was one of its first trustees. The seminary was purchased by the Church of the United Brethren in Christ in the year 1846. It was reformed the following year and renamed Otterbein College after the church’s founder, Philip William Otterbein. Westerville was platted by the year 1856, and incorporated in August 1858, during which time the town’s population was 275.

Several homes in Westerville were used as stops on the Underground Railroad, one of which is the Hanby House, located just a block from Otterbein College. The resident, Benjamin Russell Hanby, went on to write several familiar hymns and songs, including “Darling Nelly Gray,” “Who is He in Yonder Stall?” and the Christmas classic, “Up On the Housetop.”

Westerville was once known as “The Dry Capital of the World,” as it had strict laws prohibiting the sale of alcohol from 1859 through most of the 20th century. In 1995, the city annexed 941 acres of land, which held several businesses that sold alcohol. Voters have since approved alcohol sales in old Westerville at a number of specific establishments.
